CinemaCon 2011: WOW. Spectacular Demonstration Of Higher Frame Rates By James Cameron

You have to see it to believe it. I was floored when I saw the higher frame rate demo footage that Cameron made exclusively for this engagement (but will be made available for theater owners for testing purposes). All of it was in 3D of course!

Cameron and his team of contributors built a set, hired actors and a crew to create a medieval banquet scene as well as a sword fight scene to illustrate a fairly elaborate test of 24 frames per second vs. 48 and 60.

He enlisted TITANIC director of photography Russell Carpenter who used Red Epics, Arri Alexas, Phantom Flex high speed cameras (for outstanding slow motion) and of course the Pace / Cameron 3D system.

Cameron clearly pointed out that all of these tests were shot in 2K, not 4K and with good reason: The lowest hanging fruit to harvest a better cinematic experience is NOT 4K projection, but rather increased frame rate as most existing second gen digital projectors can do this.

Not to say we don't want to see both happen as soon as possible, but one step at a time!

I must say that the motion artifacts and strobing that were very present in the 24 fps panning (this is what we have been seeing EVERY time we go to the movies for a very long time) disappeared for the most part with 48 fps and were completely gone with 60. The result was dramatic and exceeded my expectations! The realism was amazing. It all really came together in the action scenes: The swordplay underscored the realism. Action movies will truly benefit from this approach to projection - like AVATAR 2!

Cameron even went so far as to double up on the frames to demo one way to achieve slow motion (although not as elegant as shooting at higher frame rates and taking a fractional approach). Top marks for showing the audience all angles of consideration for this technology.

Yes, Cameron confirmed that AVATAR 2 will be shot in higher frame rates but the discussion is whether it would be 48 or 60 fps. He mentioned that Peter Jackson was practically set to shoot THE HOBBIT in a higher frame rate but (aside from his health issues) did not want to stray from where Hollywood was going to go - it would be a gamble at the moment to choose 48 or 60. But it is happening, that I can say with confidence. Cameron did not commit to either rate, but instead is looking for cooperation in choosing one. 48 may be a more elegant solution as it is simply double the existing frame rate of 24, but 60 can still be readily achieved despite a bit more complexity in scaling back to 24 for the other screens that are not caught up yet.

One of the major points of the presentation was that all of this can be done with existing generation 2 digital projector equipment with only slight software modifications. That was driven home to the theater owners quite well. And so with neglible costs it becomes much more attractive to the owners to implement. A better picture brings the audience back in droves.

I spoke to him about AVATAR a bit after his session and I will have some video up soon, but let's be clear here - this was a day for frame rate discussion! I loved it. And so did Cameron: He is clearly in his element. We're priviledged to have him championing with the audiences best interests in mind.

CinemaCon 2011: Spoke With Cameron, Landau And Lucas At Luncheon - Prime Focus Update

Hey guys! Exciting day as I was present for the luncheon today at CinemaCon focused on stereoscopic 3D.

I had the pleasure of talking briefly with Jim Cameron and Jon Landau before the session started. Jim introduced me to George Lucas as I had never met him before and let me tell you, if you are going to meet Lucas you can't do any better than a nice intro from Mr. Cameron! Did not get a chance to speak with Katzenberg. Michael Lewis from RealD moderated the panel.

It was a very special day in a number of ways but not the least of which was the content of the event which was worth the trip in my mind. I captured the whole thing on video and will get segments of it up ASAP.

The major points were:

George Lucas:
1. Theaters are here forever.
2. ILM worked with Prime Focus on converting EPISODE I.
3. 3D is like color. He compared 3D to color and digital to sound in that sound and digital has changed everything but color and 3D have improved it. We are at the same stage with digital as we were with celluloid in 1900.
4. EPISODE VII will be in 3D and holographic!!! (Tongue in cheek) - however, we all know that it is coming... :-)
5. The reason he is doing another re-release is simply because there is a new generation of kids out there that own the mvoies, play with the toys and recite the dialogue, yet they don't have their own modern release. This one in 3D is for them.

Jeffrey Katzenberg:
1. Thinks #1 new thing coming in 5 to 10 years is being able to eat a meal at the theater (like ALAMO does today).
2. DWA has new chips on their way (really just scalable parallel processing) that will enable his team to work in REALTIME rather than wait and wait for rendering before being able to see their work and edit.
3. After seeing Zemeckis' POLAR EXPRESS in 3D, that was the moment he decided 3D was for DWA and bet the bank on it.

Jim Cameron:
1. Thinks 48 or 60 frames per second will be the next big thing and I happen to agree. More on this tomorrow!
2. Still against conversion for first run movies in that he believes native 3D is superior (I agree on this!), though he is converting TITANIC. Obviously they aren't going to redo the movie in native 3D!
3. True conversions should take 6 to 8 months, not 6 to 8 weeks and only about 20 movies are worthy enough to be converted.
4. AVATAR 2 and 3 are planned to be shot at higher framerates.

To add some further flavor to this post, I spoke with Bobby Jaffe with Prime Focus last night (and met him today along with his team) about their work on STAR WARS: EPISODE I.

Prime Focus was the sole 3rd party converter on this project and contrary to reports on other websites, the conversion is COMPLETELY done. ILM assisted of course. PF was doing 5 other movies concurrently with EPISODE I, yet completed the work in 16 to 18 weeks (not including 2 months of prep time with ILM and Lucasfilm). This is in contrast to the statement Cameron made today about the time it takes for a good conversion NOT being 6 to 8 weeks, but rather 6-8 months. Obviously 16-18 weeks is over double that smaller time period, but still makes you think if there was enough time to do it justice.

Bobby Jaffe assures me that there was enough time. They certainly have the manpower to accomplish it with 3000 total worldwide employees in LA, London and Mumbai, two thirds of which are in 3D conversion (the other third is in CG effects).

George Lucas himself took a very personal role in the conversion process as he reviewed the reels and progress made through ILM once shipped from Prime Focus.

So why should we be a little more confident about 3D conversions from Prime Focus after the CLASH OF THE TITANS debacle? Well for a number of reasons:
1. Prime Focus' expertise has grown over the past 18 months. Katzenberg mentioned this as well as to how production costs have come down from $15m to $10 to make a 3D movie in his house.
2. Much improved conversion technology. Of course no technology company is going to idly sit by and watch their tech go obsolete and so it is with Prime Focus as well.
3. The Lucasfilm vote of confidence. This is what does it for me, just as it did when DWA endorsed Legend 3D for their conversion projects. Any company that George Lucas chooses to do business with has been vetted and vetted again in order to get the keys to their kingdom, STAR WARS.

Lastly I asked Bobby that if he could name just one scene in EPISODE I that looks the best in converted 3D. Of course he said what I was thinking he would say: The pod racing. Makes sense right? Can't wait to see this thing!!

Conversion has come a long way since I started MarketSaw in early 2006. A VERY long way. I am still with Cameron in that native 3D is still superior to conversion for stereoscopic needs, but let me tell you that I am not hesitant in going to and recommending a 3D conversion for audiences. THE GREEN HORNET was amazingly well done. Not perfect, but well done.

Of course I still have Jim Cameron's framerate discussion tomorrow morning as well! And I hope to speak further with him one on one as well. STAY TUNED!!

CinemaCon 2011: Disney Screenings - CARS 2, ON STRANGER TIDES and THE AVENGERS

I just saw 26 minutes of footage from CARS 2 and 19 minutes from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES in extremely well projected 3D by MasterImage. The movies look outstanding.

I can't divulge too much info but CARS 2 looks to be a better outing than the first in my mind. Lots of action and well, anything with Michael Caine is awesome anyway!

POTC looks like a ton-o-fun too. I saw a very ingenious escape scene that I can't describe to you right now, but it is worth the price of admission in itself!

Oh and I saw much more of Blackbeard and he is going to be the perfect villain in the movie! LOVED his scenes.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall gave the clip's intro in person.

I also saw a sizzler reel for THE AVENGERS! Let me tell you the whole audience was open mouthed in watching it. Several stars were interviewed for the clip like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johannson along with director Joss Whedon who you could tell is so excited to be working on the picture. This thing is going to be MAMMOTH!

More soon!

CinemaCon 2011: Paramount, Marvel And Dreamworks Screenings

Time for some updates! I saw screenings for Paramount's and Marvel's big comic book adaptations and WOW, did they deliver.

You all know the trepidation I have as many of you do for 3D conversions. Worry not my friends! THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA are quality products. They ooze quality. Mind you we did not see the 3D conversions in action at CinemaCon, but I have seen scenes before and they are spectacular. The extended clips I just saw further underscore this.

The stories themselves are works of art! Character development is well done and the acting - well you get what you pay for. These are not cheap productions and you can easily see that you will be getting your money's worth.

Yes, Hawkeye played by Jeremy Renner is confirmed in THOR. I saw him IN ACTION. Very nice scene. He is in a more classic military outfit and not the purple suit that you may be accustomed to in the comic. This is a GOOD thing. Brings the reality of the movie home.

Chris Hemsworth himself introduced the THOR clip.

As I have mentioned on facebook and twitter, the Dreamwork's Animation clips were stunning too, especially PUSS IN BOOTS. Mark my words, PIB is going to clean up at the box office. KUNG FU PANDA 2 looks good too, but the character development and storyline for PIB will bring masses upon masses of people to the theater. Katzenberg helped intro the clips along with Jack Black and the director for KFP2.

One last thing, Paramount is obviously very proud of the work they have been doing on these Marvel and Dreamworks Animation films. Congratulations on this year's slate guys! Well done.

Must Watch: New Trailer For THE THREE MUSKETEERS!

I am loving this! Two awesome trailers in the last two days! THE THREE MUSKETEERS looks amazing and just what I am looking for in a remake. Did I care whether I saw another swing at THE THREE MUSKETEERS say 12 months ago? Nope. I did not. But now, seeing a glimpse of the performances and the special effects in this teaser I am very impressed indeed.

Can this bring in the audience? I hope so. I hope that folks aren't completely drained of all interest for the story after countless remakes, because this time around it looks very entertaining.
I can see why director Paul W.S. Anderson said that it would be a modern take on the story as the special effects are amazing. Wasn't sure what he meant back when he said it - but it makes sense now. A pure popcorn entertainment movie. It's what we go the the theater for! It's meant for the big screen.

Quick Storyline:
The hot-headed young D'Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Starring: Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, James Corden
Release: October 14, 2011

THE THREE MUSKETEERS was shot totally in native 3D.
Should be a ton-o-fun. Can't wait!

Thanks for the heads-up Pandoran!

Production Starts On CLASH OF THE TITANS 2!

Here we go! This time around, lessons have been learned. Warner Bros. have just started shooting CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 with returning stars Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Danny Huston. Additionally, the sequel will bring on Toby Kebbell, Bill Nighy, Rosemund Pike and Edgar Ramirez.

Where is Gemma Arterton you say? Good question. She is not in the release from Warner's as a cast member.

The movie will be a 3D conversion again, but this time all eyes are on the ball. No excuses. If they get it right we should be in for a treat!

Here is the official press release with storyline (emphasis is mine):
BURBANK, CA, March 21, 2011 — Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic action adventure sequel to “Clash of the Titans,” being directed by Jonathan Liebesman (“Battle: Los Angeles”). Returning to star in the film are Sam Worthington (“Avatar”) as Perseus, and Academy Award® nominees Ralph Fiennes (“The English Patient,” the “Harry Potter” films) as Hades and Liam Neeson (“Schindler’s List,” “Unknown”) as Zeus.

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Jonathan Liebesman directs the film from a screenplay by Dan Mazeau & David Leslie Johnson and Steven Knight, story Greg Berlanti & David Leslie Johnson & Dan Mazeau, based on the 2010 hit “Clash of the Titans” and the 1981 film of the same name, written by the late Beverley Cross.

The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk (“The Town”), who also produced the previous “Clash of the Titans,” and Polly Cohen Johnsen (“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”). The executive producers are Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, William Fay, Callum McDougall, Kevin De La Noy and Louis Leterrier.

Joining Worthington, Fiennes and Neeson in the international cast are Danny Huston (“Robin Hood”), reprising his role as Poseidon, god of the sea; Edgar Ramírez (“The Bourne Ultimatum,” TV miniseries “Carlos”) as the traitorous god of war, Ares; Bill Nighy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1″) as Hephaestus, whose twisted, lame figure belies his Olympian origins; Toby Kebbell (“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”) as Agenor, imprisoned thief and son of Poseidon who joins Perseus on his journey to Tartarus; and Rosamund Pike (“Barney’s Version”) as Andromeda, the princess whose life Perseus once saved, and who now, as a queen, follows Perseus into battle.

The behind-the-scenes team bringing this mythical epic to life includes director of photography Ben Davis (“The Rite,” “Kick Ass”); production designer Charles Wood (“The Italian Job,” “The A-Team”); Academy Award®-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “V for Vendetta”); and costume designer Jany Temime (the “Harry Potter” films). “Clash of the Titans 2″ also reunites several talents from the previous film, including Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis (“The Dark Knight,”); Oscar®-nominated prosthetics supervisor Conor O’Sullivan (“The Dark Knight,” “Saving Private Ryan”); and Academy Award®-winning special effects and animatronics supervisor Neil Corbould (“Gladiator”). Also on board are Oscar®-nominated makeup designer Paul Engelen (“Frankenstein,” “Robin Hood”) and hair designer Kevin Alexander (“Robin Hood,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”).

“Clash of the Titans 2″ will be filming in studios outside London
and will later shoot on location in Surrey, South Wales and in the Spanish Canary Islands on the island of Tenerife. The film is currently scheduled for release in March 2012.

A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Thunder Road Film, “Clash of the Titans 2″ is being co-produced by Furia de Titanes II, A.I.E. and COTT Productions and will be distributed in 3D and 2D worldwide by Warner Bros. Entertainment Companies.

Judging by the caliber of the professionals involved,
CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 looks like it will be a massive tentpole release for Warners. More when I get it.

Watch: PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Trailer #2

Here's the new trailer for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES from Disney! It is an improvement from the first trailer in my view as it reveals much more of the story behind what we are going to see this May.

Here's the storyline:
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth when a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Director: Rob Marshall
Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer
Writer: Ted Elliott
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
Cast: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz
Release: May 20, 2011

I like the focus on this one. The previous iterations I found to be onerous and heavy, but this one so far suits me just fine! More when I get it!

First Day Of Shooting On THE HOBBIT!! New Titles?

YES! We are finally here gang. After years and years of anticipation and dare I say ridicule (we did have the news first that Jackson was back and filming THE HOBBIT in 3D) we have arrived.

Peter Jackson (who JUST joined Facebook - you can "like" him here!) and company have just started shooting THE HOBBIT in New Zealand today and it seems we can all breathe a sigh of relief that we are here.

The photos are the only official images coming from the studio so far - but what images! A HEALTHY Peter Jackson (he has overcome his bout with a perforated stomach ulcer) stepping into the new Bag End. I say new because it is NOT in the original location that featured the hamlet (Matamata) in LORD OF THE RINGS.

Studio has also officially signed actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi for the dwarf kings Thror and Thrain too! They are native Kiwi actors.

So how about AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THERE AND BACK AGAIN for the new movie titles? Surely you didn't think they would keep it as THE HOBBIT 1 and 2? :-) These supposed titles make perfect sense to me and they are expected to make the final grade.

Check out THE HOBBIT's official blog here.

The official press release:

Production Begins in New Zealand on “The Hobbit,” Peter Jackson’s Two Film Epic Adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Timeless Classic.

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…

WELLINGTON, New Zealand--Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand, on “The Hobbit,” filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.

“The Hobbit” is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The two films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming will take place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Martin Freeman takes the title role as Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellen returns in the role of Gandalf the Grey. The Dwarves are played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur) James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori). Reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy are Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi also join the cast as Dwarf Kings Thror and Thrain, respectively. Further casting announcements are expected.

“The Hobbit” is produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, alongside Carolynne Cunningham. Executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens as co-producer. The Oscar-winning, critically acclaimed “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, also from the production team of Jackson and Walsh, grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box office. In 2003, “The Return of the King” swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the 11 categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture – the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The trilogy’s production was also unprecedented at the time.

Among the creative behind-the-scenes team returning to Jackson’s crew are director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer Dan Hennah, conceptual designers Alan Lee and John Howe, composer Howard Shore and make-up and hair designer Peter King. Costumes are designed by Ann Maskrey and Richard Taylor.

Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of weaponry, armour and prosthetics which are once again being made by the award winning Weta Workshop. Weta Digital take on the visual effects for both films, led by the film’s visual effects supervisor, Joe Letteri. Post production will take place at Park Road Post Production in Wellington.

“The Hobbit” films are co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM. The two films are planned for release in late 2012 and 2013, respectively.

WATCH: New DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 2 Featurette

My anticipation for HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 is quite a bit larger than for PART 1. In fact, I almost view PART 1 as simply the warm up. I was not overly thrilled with the pacing of PART 1 and I am looking forward to the second half amping it up a bit!

So while we are waiting for PART 2's first trailer have a look at this brief featurette for the movie. As always, I wish there were more actual behind the scenes looks - camera crews, rigging, etc - but it is better than nothing!

PART 1 ended at Chapter 24 of the book, when Voldemort regained the Elder Wand (supposedly unbeatable) so we will see PART 2 pick up from there.

Enjoy the clip!

WATCH: New PRIEST Trailer!

Mark May 13 in your calendars as I think we will be in for a special treat with PRIEST. I have always been a Paul Bettany fan, but he seems to have elevated his skills in this one.

This time around Sony is pushing social networking to get the word out as this trailer premiered on Facebook. With no fast way to link to it from that site, I had to wait for a viable option on YouTube. And here it is...

Here is the movie's storyline:
Set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires, Paul Bettany is Priest, a legendary warrior priest during the last Vampire War, who now lives in obscurity among the other human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities controlled by the Church. But when his 18-year-old niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires in the desolate wastelands outside, Priest breaks his sacred vows and ventures out to find her and seek vengeance upon those responsible, especially their brutal leader (Karl Urban). Priest is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend, Hicks (Cam Gigandet), a local outpost sheriff, and Priestess (Maggie Q), a member of his former legion of vampire-killers who has otherworldly fighting skills.

Cameron, Lucas & Katzenberg Hosting Filmmaker's Panel @ CinemaCon 2011: Yours Truly Will Be There!!

CinemaCon just got ten times more exciting this year! James Cameron, George Lucas and Jeffrey Katzenberg will be hosting a filmmaker's discussion at CinemaCon 2011 and I will have the privilege of being there! I will be shooting the event (if allowed) and will have the clips up on MarketSaw soon after.

The topic of the discussion will be all aspects of digital cinema, including... stereoscopic 3D! (was there any doubt?)

Of course I will try to get some one on one time with these fine gentlemen for us too!

Cameron will be also discussing framerates later on at the show too. Exciting days ahead!!

In the meantime, enjoy a recent clip of Cameron at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit 2011 (thanks for the link Dimitris):

Good News: SILENT HILL's Original Cast Returning For Sequel! New Production Photo...

Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger will be returning to the SILENT HILL movie franchise! David Films and super producer Don Carmody have announced that SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D (which is shooting right now) will enjoy the return of these actors along with new additions Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington.

The RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE production team will also be behind SH:R3D - so yes, that means native 3D! This time though, they are using Red cameras in 3D configuration rather than the Fusion 3D system.

Here is the official press release (emphasis is mine):
Davis Films producer Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody announced today that the stars of Silent Hill, Radha Mitchell (The Crazies, Surrogates), Sean Bean (HBO’s upcoming series Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Lord of the Rings), and Deborah Kara Unger (Shake Hands with the Devil, 88 Minutes) will return to join Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Vampire, Camilla Dickinson, Wasted on the Young, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) on Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

Filming in Toronto, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is based on a screenplay by director Michael Bassett (Solomon Kane, Deathwatch), who is joined by cinematographer Maxime Alexandre (The Crazies, Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes), production designer Alicia Keywan (The Haunting in Connecticut, Messengers,), costume designer Wendy Partridge (Silent Hill, Hellboy, Underworld) and edited by Michele Conroy (Vincenzo Natali’s Splice).

International sales are being handled by Lionsgate.

Bassett said: “It wouldn’t be the same without some of the original Silent Hill cast. Sean, Radha and Deborah’s return will certainly thrill fans of the franchise and compliment Revelations stars Adelaide and Kit.”

Alexandre added: “With the most advanced technology available, in particular the lighter, smaller and more flexible 3D Red Epic, we are able to take audiences deeper in the world of Silent Hill than they ever dreamed possible. Devotees will finally be able to enter this realm along side of Heather, Vincent, Harry and Rose and experience the psychological horror and the fear of the unknown with them.”

Hadida and Carmody most recently produced Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller. Past collaborations include Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the earlier Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is based on the acclaimed survival horror videogame franchise by KONAMI and is the sequel to Hadida and Carmody’s earlier Silent Hill directed by Christophe Gans.

For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Should be interesting to see how they mesh the old with the new characters! Can't wait for this one.

Zemekis' YELLOW SUBMARINE Has Been Sunk By Disney; Zemeckis Said To Be Mulling Return To Live Action

Listen - I had zero confidence in MARS NEEDS MOMS other than that it was aimed at family audiences. I thought THE POLAR EXPRESS was amazing in it's day (and still is in a nostalgic way), but A CHRISTMAS CAROL barely passed muster with me. The sole saving grace of what Zemeckis' ImageMovers studio has done in 3D was BEOWULF personally.

Sadly, it is time for Zemeckis to get the heck out of mo-cap - at least "ImageMover's" style mo-cap. Why not get back to his live action roots? We all loved BACK TO THE FUTURE, CAST AWAY and FORREST GUMP! Am I right? Even the hybrid WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT was amazing.

So now Disney has killed his planned mo-cap production YELLOW SUBMARINE which at worst would have featured outstanding music. Can you blame them? No, not really. A CHRISTMAS CAROL did not do so well and MARS NEEDS MOMS? Pulled in a scant $6.9m against $150m production cost. The box office disappointment was the last straw for Disney.

THR is reporting that Zemeckis has flown to Montana to think it all over and indeed he is looking at a live action movie. Robert, if you are reading this - go back to the live action we all know you excel at and keep it in stereoscopic 3D too. It'll be a blast.

WATCH: Werner Herzog's CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS Trailer #2!

Filmmaking at it's best! When a movie can deliver emotional and intellectual connections to moments of man's history that are not often dwelt upon it is truly a gift to the world. Werner Herzog's CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS will be remembered and treasured as such.

I invite you to watch the second trailer for the film and imagine what it must have been like to not only see these cave drawings, but what it must have been like to DRAW them in the first place. What inspired them?

Here is the synopsis:
CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, a breathtaking new 3D documentary from the incomparable Werner Herzog (ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, GRIZZLY MAN) follows an exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. A hit at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS is an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of pristine artwork dating back to human hands over 30,000 years ago — almost twice as old as any previous discovery.

Werner Herzog is a wizard at conjuring unforgettable visions. Now he brings us the earliest known visions of mankind: the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave art of southern France, created more than thirty thousand years ago. By comparison, the famous cave art of Lascaux is roughly half as old. Since Chauvet’s discovery in 1994, access has been extremely restricted due to concerns that overexposure, even to human breath, could damage the priceless drawings. Only a small number of researchers have ever seen the art in person.

Herzog gained extraordinary permission to film the caves using lights that emit no heat. But Herzog being Herzog, this is no simple act of documentation. He initially resisted shooting in 3D, then embraced the process, and now it’s hard to imagine the film any other way. The 3D format proves essential in communicating the contoured surfaces on which the charcoal figures are drawn. Beyond the walls, Herzog uses 3D to render the cave’s stalagmites like a crystal cathedral and to capture stunning aerial shots of the nearby Pont-d’Arc natural bridge. His probing questions for the cave specialists also plunge deep; for instance: “What constitutes humanness?”

Enjoy!
